The deadline matters: once a formal opposition is served, you typically have two months to file your defence (Form TM8) — or enter a cooling-off period to negotiate. Miss it, and your application is usually treated as abandoned.
A TM7 is a formal opposition filed against your trade mark application at the UK Intellectual Property Office. It starts formal proceedings — and the clock on your response is already running.
A TM7A is notice that another party has requested more time to consider opposing your application — often the first sign that discussions may be possible. Neither document automatically means your application will fail.

Common questions
Note the date it was served, as your deadline runs from then. Do not ignore it, and do not contact the opponent before you understand your options. A risk assessment tells you where you stand within 48 hours.
A TM7A means another party has asked for more time to decide whether to oppose. A TM7 is the formal opposition itself. A TM7A is often the best moment to act, because discussions may still be possible.
You typically have two months from the date the opposition is served to file your defence (Form TM8), or the parties can agree a cooling-off period to negotiate. Missing the deadline usually means your application is treated as abandoned.
With us, a £250 fixed-fee risk assessment first, then an all-inclusive £3,500 Fixed-Fee Settlement Package if settlement is the right route. Monthly payment plans are available.
